Skilled Hands Considered a Success

Last updated: 8 Jul 2010

WHEN CARNIVAL CAME TO TOWN!

Plymouth Age Concern's Annual Skilled Hands Art & Craft Exhibition never fails to impress!

This was the show's 58th year – but this year was a little different. For a start, the exhibition had a new venue – the Charity's own Elspeth Sitters House Centre on the Barbican – and was open to the public for longer – 4 whole days from 16th to 19th June.

There were 415 entries this year covering the full range of thirty art and craft classes – from pottery to needlecraft, poetry to beadwork, painting to papercraft and much much more! The theme of this year's show was “Carnival” and visitors were treated to a riot of colour, imagination and skill. Exhibits included a 5 foot high clown, a helter-skelter, several carousels, a village fete – and, of course, dozens of masks!

Every exhibit was judged and received a certificate. The very best entries were awarded cups and, this year, the Cup For Outstanding Exhibit went to Mrs. Rita Kingdom for her wonderful knitted Carnival Scene. The Sara Grier Cup for Best Group Display was awarded to Plymouth Age Concern's own River View Centre.

Over 400 people visited the exhibition during its four open days. In addition to the displays of work, visitors were able to enjoy watching demonstrations of lace-making by ladies from the Tor Lace Guild. Delicious snacks and refreshments were available, and the chance to win a prize in the Friends of River View Instant Raffle.

Elspeth Sitters House Centre proved very successful as the exhibition's new venue. It is therefore anticipated that next year's event will be held at the centre again next June. The theme will be “Fairy Land”, which is sure to attract some truly beautiful pieces of work. Full details, including a schedule of classes, will be available early 2011.

So thank you to all those who contributed to the success of this year's exhibition, either as exhibitors or visitors – your support was greatly appreciated. We hope to see you all again next year. In the meantime, please spread the word so that others can be sure not to miss this fantastic event.
