Channel record for Guernsey swimmer

Last updated: 1 Sep 2011

An inspiring swimmer from the channel islands has shown us all that with determination, anything is possible by crossing the English channel, becomming the oldest person to have done so.

Roger Allsop (who turned 70 in April) from Guernsey,  completed his personal challenge five years after he first beat the record for the oldest Briton to swim the channel. Now, having beaten his own record he has been quoted as feeling elated at his new achievement.

Mr Allsop, grandfather of three set off from Dover's Shakespeare Beach at 8am on the 30th of August 2011 and completed his swim 17 hours 51 minutes later, having swum over 21 nautical miles.

This is not the first physical feat Mr Allsop has completed, however. At age 60, he completed the London marathon, saying "I know how important it is to keep active in mind and body to live a healthy retirement and so I set myself physical challenges to ensure that I keep as fit and healthy as I can."

With this in mind, Plymouth Age Concern is running a number of initiatives under the Fit As A Fiddle Project. Find out more about it by clicking here.
